Usamos there is = hay para sustantivos contables en singular y para sustantivos incontables. Mientras usamos there are = hay sólo para sustantivos contables en plural.

La forma singular en el pasado es there was y la forma plural es there were. Ambas formas corresponden a había o hubo en español.
